About the Centre

The Church of Ireland Centre is the student Chaplaincy at Queen's University in Belfast, run by the Church of Ireland. In 2006 the Centre celebrated its 50th anniversary with a formal evening in the Great Hall of the University.

The Centre accommodates around 40 residential students each year but is home to many more. Our lively student café (The Oasis) and the many weekly events that run here make the place a hive of activity. At the heart of the chaplaincy is a vibrant and welcoming Christian faith which enables students to build great friendships but also grow in their knowledge of God. Worship is core to the Centre’s life and this is reflected in the contemporary worship services that take place every Sunday at the Church of the Resurrection (10.30am and 8.30 pm).

Our busy Freshers' Week programme will give students a chance to sample life at the Centre and learn about the activities and opportunities that are available through involvement in the chaplaincy (see the accompanying leaflet for details). Along with the other major chaplaincies we endeavour to do all we can to serve the students of Queen’s. In this first semester the Church of Ireland Centre will run an Alpha course for any wanting to explore the Christian faith and will also provide mid-week fellowship via ‘Core Group’ – an informal worship and bible study event.

The Aim & Objectives of the COISC

AIM:

The overall aim of the Church of Ireland Centre in QUB, focussed on the Church of the Resurrection is to be a place of worship, mission, ministry and prayer within the University community.

OVERALL OBJECTIVES/DIRECTIONS:

1. That the accommodation at the Centre would be a place of Christian Living which will build up those living in it and be a witness and open door to those outside.

2. That the worship of God in the church would be alive, welcoming, relevant and biblical, so that staff and students may find in the Church of the Resurrection a place of Fellowship, Christian community and discipleship.

3. That we should provide pastoral care for all Church of Ireland Students in the University and for others, staff and students, who come our way and other members of the Church of the Resurrection.

4. That we should be involved in evangelism in the University community, in our land and and worldwide and that people should be helped to see the whole of their lives as partners in mission.

5. That we should be actively open to Christians of other traditions. This applies to openness within the fellowship and also openness as a whole church, to participate in interdenominational ventures.

6. That we should seek to enable people to think within a Christian perspective about their studies, lifestyles, and about issues of importance in today's world.

7. That all who are part of the fellowship might be enabled to know, value and use their specific ways of serving as part of the ministry of the whole church.

8. That the Oasis would be a doorway for students into the life of the chaplaincy. That it would provide low cost, good quality food and that its atmosphere would be welcoming and accepting.
